Speech-language summer program provides literacy enrichment for children and resources for families
School may be out for a few more weeks, but more than 50 local school-age children and their parents participated in a program in June designed to rev up literacy skills and foster a love of reading — the perfect antidote to the dreaded academic backslide many students experience when classrooms close for the summer.
Occupational Therapy Associate Professor Ricky Joseph retires
Recently retired Associate Professor Ricky Joseph, PhD, OTR, had worked in the occupational therapy profession for almost 47 years when he retired May 31.
When he joined the Department of Occupational Therapy in 2013, Joseph brought more than two decades of experience working as an occupational therapist in the U.S. Army.

The School of Health Professions in June celebrated the opening of its NeuroRecovery Research Lab, which is dedicated to spinal cord injury rehabilitation research.
New chair for Department of Physical Therapy seeks to encourage innovation and collaboration       Â
The new program chair for the Department of Physical Therapy, Associate Professor Bradley Tragord, PT, DPT, DSc, said he plans to encourage faculty to innovate in the classroom and in their research.
“I’m excited to serve our faculty, staff and students,” Tragord said. “We are world-class in terms of our faculty. That allows us to be positioned to make a big push in our profession, not only in San Antonio but also in the nation and internationally. For me to be able to be involved in that is a nice honor.”
First class in Bachelor of Science in Medical Sciences program graduated this spring
The first cohort of the Bachelor of Science in Medical Sciences program graduated in May. The program is designed to prepare students for application to graduate programs in the health care field, including medicine, dentistry, nursing, pharmacy and allied health.

Two School of Health Professions programs started a new tradition this spring by holding pre-commencement hooding ceremonies for their graduating students.

The Doctor of Occupational Therapy Class of 2025 celebrated its accomplishments in scholarship, leadership, service and research during its white coat and recognition ceremony on May 3 in Holly Auditorium.
The students received their white coats and pins at the end of their second year in the program and ahead of their final year, which includes a capstone experience.
Master of Physician Assistant Studies Class of 2026 receives white coats
Fifty-nine members of the Master of Physician Assistant Studies Class of 2026 received white coats and pins on May 24 in front of a full house of family and friends at Holly Auditorium.
Although for some health professions programs, receiving the white coat traditionally marks the transition from the classroom phase to the clinical phase of the program, MPAS students receive their white coats in their first year, following orientation.
