Dental Public Health Residency
Part of the Department of Comprehensive Dentistry
The specialty of dental public health focuses on the art and science of preventing and controlling dental disease and promoting dental health through organized community efforts. Our program prepares residents to be future dental public health experts who address the social determinants of health to reduce oral health disparities and inequities in vulnerable populations. The residents in this program participate in seminars, conduct dental public health research, and provide preventive services at elementary schools in our school-based prevention programs. We鈥痳equire residents to teach undergraduate dental students, as well as participate in clinical rotations across South Texas. Our program offers service-learning experiences within dental public health clinics across the country.
Our Dental Public Health Residency Program equipments residents with an excellent education and professional experiences which will be instrumental to the develop of the following traits and marketable skills:
- Examine current oral health trends and needs within a community to determine areas of improvement.
- Enhance critical thinking including analysis skills, excellent communication and attention to detail.
- Identify, evaluate, and interpret scientific literature to support theories and applications.
- Understand and monitor new oral health programs and policies to advocate culturally appropriate community oral health delivery to vulnerable populations.
